A perennial, tufted grass with an upright growth habit, reaching from 60–120cm in height. It has linear, flat green leaves that are 10–20cm long and 2–6 mm wide, remaining green until they die back. It produces a compact, upright cluster of slender, lance-shaped spikelets, each containing five to twelve tiny, grass-like florets. It blooms in June and July
