Deciduous, clump-forming perennial grass to 1m tall, with narrow upright mid-green leaves, developing strong purple tints towards the tips from late summer, the green parts of the leaf turn yellow in autumn. Produces airy sprays of tiny purplish flowers from late summer to autumn
