A medium-sized epiphytic orchid, producing a clump of pseudobulbs (thickened stem on base of each growth) which serve as a storage organ for water and nutrients. Each pseudobulb carries one large, dark green, elliptic, leathery leaf. Flowering stems emerge from the base of the plant in spring. 15 cm short, pendant racemes bear 2-5 large, waxy flowers. Measuring 10cm across, each flower is white or pale yellow, with two dark spots in the centre. The flowers of this orchid have evolved in a very unique way - to perfectly mimic and deceive their pollinator. Downwards facing flowers are pollinated by male Euglossine bees (also known as Orchid Bees) that confuse the flowers for females. The flowers are short-lived, lasting only 2-4 days, but large plants produce many inflorescences that flower in succession.
