A tall, strong evergreen, rhizomatous perennial with rosettes of modified leaf stems called 'phyllodes' which function as insect-catching tubular pitchers with hooded lids. These strong pitchers are pale green, veined with dark red and have a dark red splash on the white and red lid. Flowers are bright red with drooping petals, and emerge from the top of the stalks in spring
