A tall, evergreen, rhizomatous perennial with rosettes of modified leaf stems called 'phyllodes' which function as insect-catching tubular pitchers with hooded lids. These pitchers are pale green to yellow with a veined, raspberry-red lid. Flowers are bright red with drooping petals, and emerge from the top of the stalks in spring
