Vegetables plus fruit

Having fruit trees on your allotment adds structure and permanence to your plot

picking pearsAdding permanent plantings to a plot alters the workflow and creates different peaks and troughs of labour. Fruit needs far less work than vegetables, which helps reduce the labour involved in running the plot. Fruit bushes or trees may yield lower volumes of produce than vegetables, but these are crops of greater value. Something has to give, however, and large areas of fruit means that the least-rewarding vegetables need to be dropped from the cropping scheme.
