An upright, bulbous perennial with glossy green leaves carried in whorls on sturdy stems usually up to 1m tall but sometimes reaching heights in excess of 1.5m. In late spring, clusters of 2-5, nodding, orange to yellow flowers are produced and topped by a tuft of small, leaf-like bracts
