What started as a way to get by gradually grew into something much more. I now have regular, ongoing customers and run my own successful gardening business, No.1 Woman Gardener. Along the way I discovered that horticulture suits me perfectly. I have a natural creative flair, a good eye for detail, and a hardworking, ethical approach to my work. I am also neurodiverse, and working outdoors, in nature and away from busy, high-pressure environments allows me to thrive. Gardening gives me the freedom to choose who I work for and the environments in which I feel happiest and most productive.
Although I am largely self-taught, I wanted to deepen my knowledge and gain a proper understanding of areas such as plant identification and propagation, particularly taking cuttings. I also wanted to be part of a learning community with shared interests so I chose to study the RHS Level 2 Practical qualification one day a week. Despite feeling quite fearful about starting the course, I was made to feel comfortable enough to attend.
My experience as an RHS learner has been extremely positive. My tutor is outstanding - her patience, presentation style, and depth of knowledge have made a huge difference to my confidence and learning.
Studying for an RHS qualification has helped me build confidence in my existing skills, fill in knowledge gaps, and feel more assured in my professional practice. It has reinforced that horticulture is not just a job for me, but a path that supports my wellbeing, independence, and long-term future.
