Studying this has given me not only technical knowledge, but a real sense of confidence. I now understand the science behind plant growth, soil health and crop maintenance, which has strengthened me both professionally and personally. It has allowed me to approach growing with greater purpose and precision, rather than simply relying on experience alone.
During lockdown, I made my first attempt at growing vegetables at home. What began as a small project quickly became something far more meaningful. Tending to crops each day was incredibly calming and had a positive impact on my mental wellbeing during an uncertain time. Seeing seeds develop into food that I had grown myself was incredibly rewarding.
This year, I have taken on my first allotment and the thought of growing my own food, produce that will be harvested by my hands, taken home, and shared with family fills me with so much joy.
One of the things I value most about horticulture is the community. It’s a world built on generosity, shared knowledge and encouragement. You’re never far from someone willing to offer advice or celebrate your successes with you. Being part of that community makes the journey even more fulfilling.
