Remembering Nigel Dunnett (1962–2026)
The RHS is deeply saddened by the loss of Nigel Dunnett, RHS Ambassador and legendary plantsman whose influence on horticulture will be felt for generations to come
Dr Nigel Dunnett BSc (Hons), MSc PhD FLI was Professor of Planting Design and Urban Horticulture in the Department of Landscape at the University of Sheffield. Nigel was a pioneering figure in ecological planting and naturalistic design, celebrated for his ability to combine rigorous science with beauty, creativity and a deep respect for nature. His work transformed how we think about planting in both public and private spaces, championing resilient, wildlife‑rich landscapes that respond intelligently to climate and place.
He will be especially remembered for the Sheffield Grey to Green project, which transformed urban infrastructure into living, dynamic landscapes and for his sensitive reimagining of the Barbican Beech Gardens in London, bringing renewed richness and seasonal depth to one of London’s most iconic public spaces. He was a lead planting design consultant for the Olympic Park from around 2007 onwards, working closely with Professor James Hitchmough and alongside designers including Sarah Price.
Nigel designed several show gardens at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, including six Main Avenue gardens. His most recent gardens include the RBC Blue Water Roof Garden (2013), the Greening Grey Britain Garden (2017) Feature Garden and most recently The Hospitalfield Arts Garden in 2025.
Nigel’s legacy lives on in the landscapes he helped shape, the ideas he advanced and the many people he inspired to see planting as a powerful force for environmental and cultural good. He will be greatly missed and warmly remembered.
Arit Anderson led the tributes on Instagram: “For those that knew him well, you know we have just lost one of our dear talented friends and our beautiful world of plants and design will miss him sorely.”
