About the garden
An example of a complete, reconstructed 16th-century garden, Villandry was laid out on a massive scale in the early 20th century, based on designs from 1540 by the royal gardener Androuet de Cerceau.
The formal potager alone spans a three-acre square and contains more than 50,000 vegetables, formally planted in nine eye-catching patterns. These patterns are renewed every six months. Above the potager lie formal flower gardens and the Garden of Love, full of colour symbolism.
The entire garden contains more than 31 miles of box hedging and trained yew trees, which provides structure throughout the year.
