Garden and lakes views open up from every winding path in this cleverly designed landscape, a true horticultural work of art. In spring, the paths are lined with colourful clouds of azaleas and rhododendrons, and varied trees play host to birds returning from their winter migration. In summer, the lakes are covered with waterlilies, with cooling waterfalls creating a sense of tranquil relaxation.
As the late summer warmth gives way to the colder air of autumn, nature responds with its annual spectacle of colour, guaranteed to stop you in your tracks. Reflections in the still lakes are so faultless that it’s hard to tell which way is up and which way is down, the illusion only broken by the breath of an autumn breeze.
When the last leaf has fallen and winter arrives, the garden takes on a stillness and sculptural beauty. Pause for a moment on a bridge above the waterfall or cascade and let the sound of rushing water and the view across the misty lakes create a scene of perfect calm.
Venture out across the historic parkland and visitors will be rewarded with scenery that has hardly changed for 100 years. Copses of trees provide excitement for young explorers looking for adventure, while the River Ouse, which forms the boundary of the parkland, provides a peaceful location for spotting the resident winter birds.
Enjoy delicious homemade refreshments and food in the Coach House Cafe and don’t forget to pop into the second-hand bookshop. The shop is full of ideas for gifts and treats for visitors, their family and friends.
