Powis Castle & Garden
About the garden
Powis Castle’s garden retains many of its historic features, including 17th-century Italianate terraces, an Edwardian formal garden and a wooded landscape garden on the Wilderness Rdge. Redesigned and embellished over more than 400 years, it reflects the evolving ambitions and visions of the Herbert family, who have occupied the property since the 1570s.
The Edwardian formal garden is the creation of Lady Violet, wife of George Herbert, the fourth Earl of Powis. From the formal garden, visitors can enjoy some of the best views of the 13th-century castle. The theatrical terraces, blasted out of rock with the original aviary and orangery, tumble down from the castle and lead statues of dancing shepherds and shepherdesses. Thoughtfully designed herbaceous borders line the terraces, brimming with vivid colour throughout the summer. Cloud-like yew trees at 30ft high spill over the terraces and are a real showstopper.
Please note: Dogs are allowed into the garden from the 1 November – 28 February
