About the garden
Filoli, set against the backdrop of the Santa Cruz Mountains, offers 16 acres of formal design and natural beauty. Visitors can explore a series of garden rooms framed by terraces, including the elegant English Renaissance-style section with yew-lined avenues and the dramatic Sunken Garden, designed by Bella Worn and planted with succulents and cacti. Seasonal displays bring year-round colour, from spring daffodils and tulips to summer roses and salvias, while the Walled Garden provides intimate spaces shaded by blossoming crab apple and cherry trees. Beyond, the working garden showcases rows of fruit, vegetables and flowers.
Historic features such as the Daffodil Meadow, Garden Orchard and the High Place, once a green theatre, add depth to the experience, alongside the Bowling Green and outdoor event spaces. Filoli’s legacy reflects the vision of designers and horticulturists like Bruce Porter and Bella Worn, with mature trees serving as living storytellers of its evolution. Today, Filoli remains a destination of timeless elegance, blending horticultural heritage with inspiration for gardeners and nature lovers alike.
