About the garden
This beautiful garden is situated at the home of 18th-century naturalist Gilbert White, author of the acclaimed nature writing classic The Natural History of Selborne. Gilbert White’s House and Gardens spans 30 acres and features a diverse range of spaces, including a formal garden, orchards, a kitchen garden, an herb garden, and a naturalist's garden with a wildlife pond and wildflower meadows.
Gilbert designed his garden in the style of the English Landscape Movement, drawing inspiration from the Garden Kalendar journal. The Naturalist’s garden reflects the local flora and has been designed and planted based on his work, Flora Selborniensis published in 1766. Beehives have also been introduced to support pollination and provide honey, which is available for purchase in the shop.
The team is committed to managing the garden sustainably, using no pesticides or herbicides and employing traditional methods, such as scything.
