About the garden
Goddards on the edge of York is a five-acre Arts and Crafts masterpiece, designed in the 1920s by George Dillistone for Noel Terry of the Terry’s chocolate family. It remains one of the few surviving examples where both hard landscaping and planting are largely intact. The garden unfolds as a series of rooms, including formal terraces and ponds, herbaceous borders, a fragrant garden and a historic glasshouse. Visitors can also explore the orchard and small kitchen garden, framed by mature trees and views across the Knavesmire to the Terry’s factory clock tower, linking the garden to York’s chocolate heritage.
Now cared for by the National Trust, Goddards offers a peaceful retreat with seasonal interest and a rich sense of history. While the house serves as a regional office and is closed to the public, the garden remains open for exploration and relaxation. With its thoughtful design and tranquil beauty, Goddards is a hidden gem that celebrates the enduring connection between home, garden and heritage. Please note: accessible parking only and outdoor seating for refreshments.
