About the garden
Raby Castle Gardens in County Durham combines historic character with contemporary design in a stunning five-acre walled garden. Recently remodelled by award-winning designer Luciano Giubbilei with Lady Barnard, the garden retains its 18th-century spirit while introducing bold new features. Highlights include the estate’s famous yew hedges, the historic Raby fig and beautifully framed views that create an atmosphere of tranquillity. The East Garden now features a grass amphitheatre, the first of its kind in northern England, hosting summer performances and offering spectacular views of the castle.
The Formal Garden is a serene space of mazes and a flowing rill, while the West Garden is more productive, with raised beds, a greenhouse and a vibrant cut-flower area filled with roses, peonies and dahlias. These additions complement the garden’s rich history, which dates back to Thomas Wright’s 18th-century design and includes original features such as a gateway and the ornamental pond. Today, Raby blends heritage with innovation, offering visitors a unique experience that celebrates horticulture, creativity and centuries of gardening tradition.
