About the garden
Home to the Sitwell family for nearly 400 years, Renishaw Hall and Gardens is predominantly an Italianate garden set amidst the traditional English countryside. The house and formal grounds date back to the 1620s, but it was the passion and commitment of Sir George Sitwell – the brilliantly eccentric great-grandfather of the current owner, Alexandra Hayward (nee Sitwell) – and his admiration for the classical Italian gardens that shaped the landscape of Renishaw Hall and Gardens. He applied the principles of Italian Renaissance gardens (symmetry, proportion, scale and shadow) at Renishaw.
Visitors can admire yew hedges, pools, fountains, the Angel of Fame in the lime avenue and the Classical Temple leading down to the lakes. The lakes are a haven for wildlife, offering opportunities to spot butterflies, dragonflies and birds. The historic vineyard, planted over 45 years ago by Sir Reresby Sitwell, can now be explored via a dedicated vineyard walk.
