About the garden
York Gate Garden near Adel is an enchanting Arts and Crafts garden with Grade II National Heritage status, celebrated as one of the finest small gardens in England. Set within one acre, it features 14 distinct garden rooms, a striking sand garden and a tranquil meadow walk. Seasonal highlights include tulips, flourishing borders, succulents and wildflowers in spring and summer, while autumn and winter reveal intricate topiary and structural beauty, finishing with snowdrops and vibrant winter gems.
Created by the Spencer family in 1951 and gifted to Perennial in 1993, York Gate is renowned for its exquisite detail and seamless design, with vistas and focal points such as The Folly, The Arbour and the Tall Sundial. Visitors can enjoy the plant centre, gift shop and a popular café serving homemade treats. York Gate remains a garden of exceptional artistry and timeless appeal, offering inspiration and tranquillity in every season.
