RHS & BBC The One Show’s Growing Together Award 2025 for Community Gardening

Community groups who have transformed a green space can nominate themselves for an award in partnership with BBC’s The One Show

The RHS and BBC’s The One Show’s Growing Together Award shines a light on community gardening groups that are transforming green or unloved spaces into a thriving community garden, benefitting the whole community and encouraging people to try gardening for the first time.

We are particularly keen to hear about projects that involve a diverse range of people – diversity isn’t just about visual difference, it’s about celebrating individuality. We would love to hear from those traditionally under-represented in gardening and who have benefited from starting to garden or having a new outdoor space to use.

The deadline to submit entries is 6pm on Friday 13 June 2025. The results will be announced on the BBC’s The One Show in the autumn.

The 2024 Growing Together Award winners, Grass Roots Oldham (pictured above), were praised for taking a derelict site and turning it into a green oasis complete with orchard, forest school, animal husbandry and conservation workshops. The group addressed accessibility by facilitating transport, providing shared meals and accommodating children. Since then, they’ve gone on to launch a paddle board centre carrying out litter picks on the Rochdale Canal next to the site and aim to double the produce collected through community harvesting events from one to two tonnes of food, including plumbs, apples, kale, wasabi, strawberries and plenty more.

The group say:

“What unites us is our shared connection to the land and growing food. We have neighbours dropping in to tell us that the garden ‘feels like home’, whether it invokes memories of harvest time in Zambia, or of visiting family in Pakistan. It’s a beautiful space where cultures and shared stories and traditions converge, from all walks of life.”

How can your community enter the competition?

What we are looking for?

Entries are now closed for the RHS & BBC The One Show’s Growing Together Award 2025.

  • We are looking for projects that clearly demonstrate the transformation that has taken place. We would love to know what the space was like before you started, what work was needed, what (if any) challenges you had to overcome, and who volunteered to help
  • We want to hear about the people who have been making use of your transformed space, and how you’ve been getting new gardeners involved. We would love to know who they are, and how they got involved, how easy it was for them to participate, what activities they have been doing, and whether they joined in one-off activities or have become regular volunteers
  • We want to understand what the newly transformed space means to your group and your local community. We would love to know what makes it special and why it is important to your group, and how it benefits the local community and the local environment
