A large-sized, evergreen, tropical, semi-terrestrial, epiphytic orchid hybrid. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, the new growth appears from the central tip of a long, slender, scrambling, stem-like rhizome. Terete leaves are attached at base to a green, alternate sheaths, covering the rhizome. As new leaves from at the top, older, lower leaves gradually drop off. Long, adventurous roots, attaching to anything in their surroundings emerge directly frm the stem, following the ascending growing trend. The plant flowers in spring or early summer on 15 - 30cm long, erect racemes, carrying approximately 6 large, long-lasting, fragrant flowers. Each flowers is 5 - 6cm large, with prominent, wide lip. Cultivar 'John Lacock' is almost pure white, with yellowish centre at the back of the lip.
