A compact, clump-forming cultivar with silvery leaves with very dark veining and maroon undersides, having a slightly ruffled appearance. Young foliage is flushed pinkish brown with purple veins which mature to black. Clumps are up to 45cm wide. Flowers are pinkish white, on slender reddish stems to 60cm tall, in summer

Grow in fertile, moist, but well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. If the soil is moist, a shadier position may be tolerated. To prevent the rhizomes rising to the surface, mulch annually and divide every few years
Propagate by division; this genus needs to be divided regularly. Lift the plant once in spring growth, taking small vigorous sections from around the edge. Each section should have good roots and 2-3 shoots
