A large sized, evergreen, tropical, hot-growing, terrestrial orchid hybrid. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, the new growth emerges from a central tip on a long, thin, stem-like rhizome, covered in green, leaf-bearing sheaths. Terete, pencil-like leaves are approximately 8cm long, bright green. As new leaves emerge from the top, older, lower leaves gradually drop off. Long, adventurous roots, attaching to anything in their surroundings emerge directly from the main stem, following the ascending growing trend. The plant flowers in spring or summer on a long, upright inflorescences, carrying 5-10 large, showy, long-lasting flowers. Flowers are approximately 5cm wide and 6cm tall, with top sepals and petals light pink, while lower sepals are white. Wide, prominent lip is bright pink or purple, with yellow-orange centres. Miss Joaquim is the national flower of Singapore, elected in 1981. It has been one of the first registered hybrids that originated from Singapore. To flower successfully, it requires long sunlight days throughout the year and tropical, humid, sunny location. It is best grown by the moss pole or other support. Plants must grow approx. 50cm over the support before they begin to flower.
