A giant sized, evergreen, tropical epiphytic orchid species. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, the new growth appears from the central tip on a long, slender, scrambling rhizome. Terete, pencil-like leaves are attached at the base to green, alternate leaf sheaths, covering the rhizome. As new leaves appear at the top of the plant, older leaves, lower on the stem gradually fall off. Long, thin, epiphytic roots, attaching to anyting in their surroundings, grow directly from the stem, following the ascending growing trend. Inflorescences up to 30cm long appear from axils of leaves in late sping or early summer, carrying 3 - 6, well-spaced, large, showy flowers. Each flower can measure up to 10cm in diameter. Upper sepal and petals are white or pale pink, lip is disctinctively yellow or orange at the throat. Side lobes of the lip are typically curved towards the centre.
