A rhizomatous perennial with fans of greyish-green foliage. Flowers are produced, 2-3 per stem, on stems 25cm high, from mid spring to early summer, they have wrinkled margins and unusual contrasting blue-violet standards over russet-red falls and a white tipped yellow-orange beard
