Vanda tricolor subsp. suavis
Vanda suavis
A large-sized, evergreen, tropical epiphytic orchid species. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, the new growth emerges from a central tip on a long, stem-like rhizome, covered with alternate, leaf-bearing, green sheaths. Strap-shaped, green or dark green leaves up to 60cm long, angle out from the main stem. As the new leaves grow from the top of the plant, old, lower leaves gradually drop off. A characteristic feature of the plant is an impressive root system that hangs downwards at the base of the plant. New roots emerge from the rhizome, following the ascending growing trend. Multiple inflorescences emerge from axils of leaves and carry 15 or more large, waxy, fragrant flowers. Typical for this species is that it can bear large number of inflorescences, flowering simultaneously. Long-lived flowers are 5-7cm across, white with maroon spots over the petals and sepals, with pink edges and bright pink, sometimes purple lip. Colouration and density of pattern on flowers is variable.
