A clump-forming perennial, to 70cm high in flower, with long green leaves, deeply cut or completely divided into lance-shaped leaflets. In summer, it produces buds encased in overlapping bracts with hairy edges, opening to large, pale purple flowers on upright stems, with a sparse ring of narrow outer florets surrounding a centre crowded with tiny paler flowers
