A climber 1.5-2m high with green leaves and flowers which are 15cm across, and composed of elliptic, slightly wavy-edged sepals, velvety purple at first then maturing to mid-blue with a dark purple-red bar, and creamy-yellow stamens, in early summer and again in late summer and early autumn; many clematis are visited by bees for pollen, and some also provide nectar

Pruning
