A large-sized, evergreen, tropical epiphytic orchid, valued for its unusual, bright-coloured flowers. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, the new growth emerges from a central tip on a long, stem-like rhizome, covered in leaf-bearing, green, alternate sheaths. Strap-shaped, green or dark green leaves angle out from the main stem. As the new leaves grow from the top of the plant, older lower leaves gradually drop off. A characteristic feature of the plant is an impressive root system, that hangs downwards at the base of the plant. New roots emerge from the central stem, following the ascending growing trend. Multiple inflorescences appear from the axils of leaves and the stem and carry 8 or more large, waxy, round-shaped flowers. Petals and sepals are white, covered in a distinctive mosaic, square pattern of blue or purple lines. Each flower measures over 10cm in diameter.
