A slow-growing tree to around 3m which has a very restricted form. Its leaves are shiny dark green on the upper surface and downy grey-cream beneath and are frilly-looking. In the autumn they turn yellowy brown before completely brown. However, instead of falling, they remain on the tree all winter, making it a possible choice for an informal hedge. In the spring there are yellow male catkins but they do not become acorns
