A deciduous small tree or large shrub with a conical habit and oval-shaped foliage with wavy edges, emerging maroon-red in the spring, turning to mid-green in the summer then shades of darker crimson red in late summer to autumn. Creamy-white flowers (bracts) with a paler pink edge appear in June, followed by strawberry-like pink berries in the autumn
