A small, low-growing, clump-forming rhizomatous perennial to around 24cm high, with basal rosettes of lobed and toothed green leaves. Semi-double, creamy-yellow flowers with red at the base of the petals, edges and veins are held on stems above the foliage from mid April to late May. Tolerant of shady areas of the garden
