A medium sized, evergreen, tropical, epiphytic orchid hybrid, with unique dark flowers. As a monopodial orchid, a new growth emerges from a central tip on a long, stem-like rhizome, covered in green, leaf-bearing alternate sheaths. Strap-shaped, green or dark green leaves, up to 40cm long angle out from the main stem. As the new leaves emerge at the top, old leaves at the base gradually drop off. New roots appear from the main stem, following the ascending growing trend. Multiple inflorescences emerge from axils of leaf sheaths and stem, and carry up to 8, well-spaced flowers. Flower are approximately 5cm in diameter, with petals and sepals flat, waxy and tesselated. Purple Rain is a modern hybrid originating from Florida, registered in 2016. 'Karina' is extremely dark, purple, almost black coloured cultivar, with dark purple column and lip. It carries many awards by AOS and RHS committees.
