A large shrub or small tree, up to 5m high, with lance-shaped, slightly glossy dark green leaves with serrated edges and long pointed tips. Compact clusters of tiny reddish-pink flowers are produced along the branches in spring, followed on female plants by dark seeds partly encased in fleshy white fruits
