A medium sized, evergreen, tropical epiphytic orchid species. As a typical example of a monopodial orchid, the new growth appears from the central tip on the stem-like rhizome, covered with green, leaf-bearing, alternate bracts. Strap-shaped, green or dark green leaves, up to 50cm long angle out from the main stem. As the new leaves grow from the top, older, lower leaves gradually fall off. Characteristic root system hangs downwards from the base of the plant. New roots emerge from the main stem, following the ascending growing trend. As they grow, they attach to any surface, anchoring the plant. Inflorescences emerge from the axils of leaves and main stem, and carry up to 8 scented, heavy- textured flowers, measuring approx. 7cm across. Petals and sepals are rounded, red-bronze, white at the back, with large darker spots, sometimes completely covering the surface. Centre of the flower is distinctly white. Prominent, broad, cupped lip is rose-pink or purple.
