A large-sized, evergreen, tropical epiphytic orchid species. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, the new growth emerges from a central tip on a long, stem-like rhizome, covered in alternate, leaf-bearing sheaths. Green or dark green, strap- shaped leaves, up to 40cm long, angle out from the central stem. As the new leaves emerge from the top, the older, lower leaves gradually drop off. Leaves of this species are less densely arranged on the stems, with the sheath more prominently wrapped around the stem. New roots emerge from the central stem, following the ascending growing trend. Flowering stems develop from the axils of leaves measuring up to 25cm and carry 10 to 12, waxy, long-lasting, fragrant flowers up to 5cm large. White on outer surface, flowers are pale brown to dark maroon, tesselated and heavy-textured. Lip is pale pink or pale purple, with white centre on the column.
