A large-sized, evergreen, tropical, epiphytic orchid. As a typical example of monopodial orchid, new growth emerges from a central tip on a long, stem-like rhizome, covered in alternate, leaf-bearing sheaths. Up to 60cm long, strap-shaped, green or dark green leaves angle out from the main central stem. As the new leaves appear from the top, the older - lower leaves gradually drop off. A characteristic feature of the plant is an impressive root system at the base of the plant. New roots emerge from the central stem, following the ascending growing trend. Inflorescences emerge from the axils of leaves and carry several waxy, long-lasting open-shaped flowers. The flowers are approximately 7cm across, white or pale yellow, covered in darker spots, denser along the margins. The lip is prominently lobed - with side lobes pinkish-red and central lobe dark yellow.
