A deciduous shrub to 2.5m high, with ovate, coarsely toothed green leaves, with dense, fine hairs on the undersides and sometimes sparsely on the surface. Leaves are held on very short stems, and turn copper and bronze in autumn. In late spring, small, flat clusters of tiny white flowers are produced, these are followed in autumn by bright red berries
