A clump-forming, rhizomatous, hardy evergreen perennial to around 60cm in height, with wide, long glossy dark green leaves with large pale yellow spots. Rarely, small, inconspicuous purple-brown star-shaped flowers which resemble shrivelled prunes, appear at the base of the plant in late summer to autumn. Although most often grown as a houseplant, it is also a useful garden plant in mild areas, and is tolerant of shade and drier conditions
