A clump-forming evergreen perennial, initially with an upright habit but changing to trailing as it grows. Pointed, oval, hairy foliage is olive to yellow green, forming red-brown to grey-purple stripes in strong sunlight. Undersides are reddish-purple and flowers are purple with white anthers
