A rhizomatous perennial, to 1m high in flower, with upright, sword-shaped, grey-green leaves, and tall, branching stems bearing 9 to 11 flowers. Flowers have ruffled, deep purple standards, darker purple falls, and a purple-tipped beard. Early midseason

Cultivation

Thrives in a sunny position, in neutral to slightly acid soil with good drainage. Plant rhizomes just above soil level, as sun on the rhizomes encourages flowering. See bearded iris cultivation
