A rhizomatous perennial, to 1m high in flower, with upright, sword-shaped, grey-green leaves, and tall, branching stems bearing 8 to 9 flowers. Flowers have broad, strongly ruffled, dark purple standards, dark purple-black falls with a lighter stripe down the midrib, and a purple beard. Mid season

Cultivation
