A tough, drought tolerant, slow-growing, clump-forming, spiny bromeliad. It has rosettes of greyish recurved leaves, with white barbs along their leaf margins and reddish midribs. Mature plants can produce a tall flower stem in hot summers with bright orange tubular flowers
