An upright shrub or small tree, to 4m tall and wide, becoming rounded with age. Its five- to seven-lobed leaves are a dark reddish-purple turning a bright crimson red in the autumn. Small red flowers in spring are followed by red, winged autumn fruits

How to Grow

Cultivation

Grow in a moist but well-drained soil. Water in summer if necessary. Leaf colour is best in partial shade, although full sun can be tolerated. Leaf scorch can be caused by lack of soil moisture or excessive exposure. See Japanese maple cultivation
