A dense, branching, evergreen shrub to around 4m high with oval, glossy, leaves up to 10cm long that have smooth, flat margins. Yellow to pinkish flowers are borne in hanging catkins in spring, and on female plants may be followed by rounded fruits that ripen from green to a deep purple
