A rhizomatous perennial, to around 55cm high in flower, with upright, sword-shaped, grey-green leaves. Flowers have ruffled, dark purple standards and falls that appear almost black, and a purple beard. Early to mid season

How to Grow

Cultivation

Thrives in a sunny position, in neutral to slightly acid soil with good drainage. Plant rhizomes just above soil level, as sun on the rhizomes encourages flowering. Divide every three to five years to maintain vigour. See bearded iris cultivation
