A low-growing, deciduous thorny shrub to about 1m in height, with mid-green, glossy leaves. Clusters of single, red, cup-shaped flowers are produced in spring on distinctive, bare, twisted and contorted branches, followed, in autumn, by green fruits ripening to yellow. These can be used to make jams and jellies but please see notes on toxicity for further advice
