A perennial bulb, to around 45cm high in flower, with broadly lance-shaped, grey-green leaves. Late flowering, with cup-shaped cream flowers flamed with salmon red. This is an historic variety of 'broken' tulip, first recorded for sale over 400 years ago

How to Grow

Cultivation

This is a 'broken' tulip variety, where the colour patterns are caused by the presence of a virus in the bulb which does not affect this cultivar, but may be transmitted to others if planted nearby. Plant bulbs in late autumn, in fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny, sheltered position. See tulip cultivation for more details

Propagation

Propagate by division, separating offsets in summer when bulbs are lifted. Replant the largest bulbs in autumn, and grow on smaller ones in a nursery bed for a year. See bulb propagation for more details
