Pittosporum GREEN MOUND (‘Jule1’)

Pittosporum GREEN MOUND (‘Jule1’) is a brand‑new hybrid shrub that brings together evergreen structure, reliable hardiness and richly fragrant flowers. Compact, free‑flowering and easy to grow, it offers year‑round garden value with minimal maintenance.

Unlike many pittosporums, which are grown primarily for foliage, GREEN MOUND combines architectural form with floral interest. In late spring to early summer, it produces sweetly scented white flowers between it’s glossy foliage, which gradually fade from white to soft yellow. The fragrance carries well, adding an often‑missing sensory layer to evergreen plantings.

How it was created

GREEN MOUND is the result of a controlled

hybrid cross by breeder Frédéric Julien, combining two Pittosporum species:

  • Pittosporum tobira – valued for its naturally mounded habit and richly fragrant flowers

  • Pittosporum heterophyllum – contributing enhanced toughness and cold tolerance

The goal was to create a reliable pittosporum suitable for Northern European climates. This seedling stood out for its compact form, free flowering and resilience, successfully surviving winters in France, the Netherlands and the UK, both in containers and in open ground, without signs of damage.

Why grow it in your garden?

Pittosporum GREEN MOUND offers a rare combination of traits in an evergreen shrub:

  • Hardy to –12°C, extending pittosporum use into cooler regions

  • Sweetly scented white flowers, fading attractively to yellow

  • Evergreen structure all year round and its compact habit makes it ideal for smaller gardens, yet it has enough presence to hold its own as a feature plant in larger landscapes.

  • Drought resistant once established

  • Performs equally well in borders and large patio containers
