A traditional shrub enters the modern world

Weigela has been updated to suit today’s smaller gardens.

Like a completely new type of shrub, this dwarf and long season weigela banishes once and for all the idea that weigelas are old fashioned shrubs for boring shrubberies. Weigela Picobella Rosa ('Tvp2') is a dwarf and bushy variety that flowers all summer. It was shortlisted for the 2019 Chelsea Plant of The Year Award.

Weigela Picobella Rosa ('Tvp2')Picobella Rosa is a whole new type of weigela with small delicate foliage, a mound forming habit and constant flowering from late May to the frost,” said Charles Carr of Hillier Nurseries when he presented the plant at the Chelsea Plant of The Year Award assessment meeting. “Excellent container performance and up to six months flowering will, I’m sure, make this plant a long term winner.”

Picobella Rosa was found as a seedling on his Hazerswoude nursery in The Netherlands in July 2016 by Bert Verhoef, who has introduced a number of other new weigelas as well as physocarpus and cortaderia. He had sown a large quantity of seed collected from both named and unnamed weigelas, grown all the plants and picked this one out as special. Similar plants in other colours are in the pipeline.

Mature plants reach about 70cm in height and 1m in spread and the deep pink flowers, popular with bees, open from May to October. Pruning is not usually required.

You can order plants of Weigela Picobella Rosa ('Tvp2') from RHS Plants.

* Look out, too, for weigelas in the opposite mode. The Tower of Flowers series are tall and upright in growth with flowers in rich red or pale pink. They’re on the way.
